The rack in the attic
A homelab only I use, in a small room under the roof.
What is there
A 19-inch rack with the usual residents: a firewall, a managed switch, a server that runs virtual machines and has a GPU, a NAS, a UPS, and access points for the house.
What it does
It runs the house. Around a hundred devices are connected to it. Lights and fans follow whoever is in the room.
It answers in Turkish. The voice assistant runs entirely on the server, and nothing it hears leaves the building.
It watches itself. Everything is monitored. When something critical breaks, the light in my study turns red.
It looks after its own data. Backups run every night, and a power cut ends in a clean shutdown instead of a crash.
What it is not
A datacentre. There is one of everything, it runs warmer than it should, and there is always a list of things to fix. Most of what I learn comes from that list.
The details
When I want to go deeper into one part of it, I write it up in the notes.
